The past few months I have started to wear full coverage makeup more or less every day. It’s not really about covering up my skin because apart from a few blemishes I don’t actually need that much coverage I just generally really like the look of a full face of makeup and something about it just makes me feel that bit more ready to take on the world. You either think I’m mad, or you totally get it.
I realised a few weeks ago that my current ‘base routine’ is actually doing me pretty well – it was a rare hot day in Glasgow (I say hot, it was 25 degrees but honestly that’s as good as it gets here) and I had been at work since 9am, spent an entire day in a hot office and then went to a coffee shop and worked on blog posts for probably about 2/3 hours, so we’re talking a 12/13 hour day here. ANYWAY. It was like 8pm and I opened up my Instagram camera to take a boomerang (naturally) and I noticed that my eyebrows were still where they were supposed to be. Now if you ask me, that’s bloody miraculous.
So seen as the combination of products I’m using and the application method seems to be working rather well for me, I thought I would share them with you lovely people!
PS – don’t judge the amount of slap that goes on my face on a daily basis, IT’S ART.
Having a good morning skincare routine down before the primer touches your baby soft skin is half the battle to getting you make up to look flawless and long lasting. You need to make sure your skin is hydrated otherwise it’s just going to (literally) suck the product to try and give itself some moisture and you will be left looking patchy before you’ve even had a chance to moan at how slow the day is going.
- Superdrug Naturally Radiant Hot Cloth Cleanser
- Simple Kind to Skin Hydrating Toner
- REN Anti-Redness Serum
- Solait SPF 40 Face Cream
The first makeup product I use is a primer. I always make sure I use a water based primer rather than a silicone based one (my skin is quite dry by type and silicone sucks the life out of it). Right now I am really loving the Barry M Hydrating Pro Primer. It’s a spray and I find it a really nice boost of hydration before I get onto the war paint.
COLOUR CORRECTING – Small Oval Brush
I wanted to hate colour correcting and think it was a fad but I did it a couple of times and I’m totally Hooked with a capital H. Right now I’m using the Collection Lasting Perfection shades in ‘green’ as well as the ‘yellow’ one. I have a lot of redness around my nose and my chin where I have breakouts. It makes such a difference when I go on to apply my foundation.
FOUNDATION – Large Oval Brush
I think this product is one of my favourites of 2017 – I have been using the L’oreal Infallible Total Cover Foundation and forgive my enthusiasm but HOLY CRAP, HAVE YOU TRIED THAT?! If you have then please take this second to squeal excitedly and jump up and down with me at how good it is.
In all seriousness though, this foundation is the best from the drugstore I have ever used in terms of coverage and longevity. You do need to work fast with it and build it up to prevent looking cakey but honestly, a little bit of graft and it will be your new best friend.
At this point, I really don’t have much to cover up. I used to use a lot of concealers to cover up redness from blemishes after the foundation stage and the reason I love colour correcting so much is that by this point all my redness is gone and I just have to put a tiny bit of concealer under my eyes, at my chin and the sides of my nose.
BAKING AND SETTING
At this point I have been using a beauty blender to pack on the Rimmel Insta-fix Translucent Powder on to my under eye area and let that work while I do my eyebrows and eyeshadow. After that I dust of the excess and use the Clear Complexion powder by Rimmel again just lighlty around the rest of my face. After everything else is done, highlight and all, I use a setting spray. My absolute favourite is the Urban Decay All Nighter spray which frankly changed my life (I feel like I have been really dramatic throughout this but I’m telling you, it’s all justified) or if I’m just going to be going to work and then home I have been using and enjoying the Makeup Revolution Long Lasting Setting Spray. It gives you a dewier finish than the Urban Decay counterpart, which I like and it has a weird kind of plasticy smell to it which I also like. But probably shouldn’t.
Here are some shameless plugs to posts about products I talked about in this post:
